The Cortland, developed by Related Companies, began construction in 2019. In this section, we will review the history of this developer, as well as the details of the Cortland’s construction.
Developed by Related Companies
Related Companies is a privately owned real estate firm founded 45 years ago by Stephen M. Ross. Since then, Related Companies has developed a variety of buildings around the world, including right here in New York City. Some of Related Companies’ biggest luxury residential projects include 35 Hudson Yards, 450 Washington in Tribeca, and 520 West 28th Street.
Completed in 2022
Construction on the Cortland wrapped up in 2022. It is a 25 story luxury condominium building with 144 total units. These apartment units range from studios to five bedrooms, and are available for purchase right now. The Building: The Architecture of The Cortland
The Cortland’s architectural vision is grounded in West Chelsea’s specific location and history, Here is how the architects created this new addition to the NYC skyline.
Designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects and Olson Kundig
Two renowned architects–Robert A. M. Stern Architects and Olson Kundig–collaborated to create the Cortland. They envisioned a building that would have a classic feel, specific to its location along West Chelsea’s Hudson waterfront. In particular, they wanted to capture the industrial spirit distinct to this part of New York City.
Classic Refinement Meets Modern Luxury at The Cortland
The building’s facade consists of brick and LaSalle limestone, framed with metal rivets that evoke the industrial past while remaining distinctly modern.
There are over 1 million hand laid, artisanally crafted bricks in the facade. The kiln-fired bricks come in five deep, rich colors that combine to create a sense of depth. Additionally, the brick’s irregular edges evoke its historic surroundings (like the London Terrace apartment block).
Oversized bay windows accent the facade while allowing incredible views from within the residences. These windows create clean, modern lines that offset the rustic quality of the facade’s materials. In combination, these disparate design elements make this new development a striking yet fitting addition to the Chelsea waterfront.
The Interiors: Residences at The Cortland
The residences at the Cortland continue the building’s classic but modern aesthetic. The oversized windows let in light, making the space feel airy and bright–and there is plenty of space.
Living and Dining Rooms
The living and dining area is a large, open floor plan with plenty of room for a variety of furniture layouts. You can use the space however you see fit, taking advantage of the open floorplan’s flexibility. The Cortland’s residences have high ceilings and warm wood flooring. Select units even have marble fireplaces and outdoor terraces.
Kitchens
The kitchens feature the highest quality materials and technology. The countertops are made from imported Statuario Belgia marble from Carrara, Italy. This classic marble continues onto the backsplashes, creating a cohesive, natural, and trendy look.
The cabinets are finished in metallic Italian lacquer, and the state of the art appliances are seamlessly integrated into the cabinetry. This creates a sleek and clean look, while wood and natural materials warm up the space.
Kitchen storage is taken to the next level at the Cortland. Select units have a walk in pantry with plenty of space for all of your cooking essentials. The kitchen island also features a custom, built in Olson Kundig Jack Box–an artfully designed and convenient storage area perfect for tucking away entertaining accouterments between uses.
Bathrooms
From primary bathrooms to powder rooms, the bathrooms at the Cortland are marked by luxurious natural materials and artisan craftsmanship. Here you will find even more marble–this time in a deeper shade from Italy’s Henraux Quarry–and Ash Grey stone. These beautiful natural stones are set into wooden millwork to create a spa-like atmosphere that is at once calming, inviting, and pristine. Each primary bathroom includes a freestanding tub, a rain shower, heated floors, illuminated medicine cabinets, and dual sinks.
Bedrooms and Terraces
In select units, primary bedrooms include real marble fireplaces. These spacious bedrooms have floor to ceiling windows to let in the light and provide beautiful views.
Some units have private outdoor terraces. These exclusive outdoor spaces are a hot commodity in NYC real estate, and it’s easy to see why. Residents and their guests can relax outside while remaining in the comfort of their own home. Terraces at the Cortland have plenty of room for entertaining while taking in incredible waterfront views.
