The Neighborhood: Lower Manhattan

Lower Manhattan is where it all began. This hub for business, government, and transportation is seeing a resurgence of food, entertainment, and arts all while maintaining its illustrious history.

The Financial District’s Historic Roots

130 William is located in the beating heart of NYC–lower Manhattan. This neighborhood, also known as the Financial District, is historic and bustling. Some of Manhattan’s oldest buildings still stand here, like the Fraunces Tavern which was built in 1719 by Stephen Delancy. Other historic Financial District buildings include towering skyscrapers built in New York’s art deco heyday like One Wall Street and 70 Pine Street.

130 William was designed with a sense of place in mind. The classic architecture of the Financial District informs the structure’s shape while the contemporary materials used create a new path forward for the neighborhood’s development.

Downtown Manhattan’s Cultural Resurgence

The buildings are not the only things being revitalized in the Financial District. The neighborhood is changing, becoming more and more resident friendly.

To the South, there are multiple outdoor recreation areas, including Battery Park and Battery Park City which offer unbeatable views of the Statue of Liberty and the Hudson River. Shopping centers like The Oculus and Brookfield Place offer luxury goods while the South Street Seaport has a collection of boutiques, restaurants, and bars. The Seaport also has a historic museum the whole family will enjoy.

To the North of 130 William, you will find trendy neighborhoods packed with good food and nightlife, like Tribeca and Chinatown/The LES. City Hall and the New York City courts are also only a few blocks North of 130 William.

Connect to the Rest of the City

130 William is also right next to Fulton Street Transit Center, one of the most convenient transportation hubs in NYC. From here, residents can get to any part of the City using one of the center’s 8 different subway lines. 2 more lines, the N and W, are only a couple of blocks away.

For those who drive, 130 William is very close to the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge, as well as the Holland Tunnel.

The Developer and The Architect: The Forces Behind 130 William

There are a couple of major forces behind the creation of 130 William–the architect David Adjaye and the developer the Lightstone Group.

Designed by Architect Sir David Adjaye

Sir David Adjaye OM OBE is a world renowned, award winning, British Ghanaian “starchitect.” He has designed everything from luxury single family residences to major museums. While he has built structures all over the world, some of his most famous works in the United States include the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington D.C., Ruby City in San Antonio, Texas, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver in Colorado.

Here in New York City, he designed the Studio Museum in Harlem, but he had yet to design any residential spaces for NYC until 130 William. In fact, 130 William is Adjaye’s first residential high rise in the United States. In all of his works, Adjaye seeks to creatively combine contemporary design with the unique history of the surrounding area. At 130 William, he used this context to create a building that could not exist anywhere else but here.

Developed by The Lightstone Group

130 William was developed by the Lightstone Group, one of the U.S.’s largest private real estate companies. Lightstone has built a diverse array of properties, including office buildings and residential housing, as well as hospitality, commercial, and retail spaces.

Their 178 properties around the world combine to be worth around $6 billion, and their future development plans are projected to come in around $3.5 billion. They plan to further develop projects in New York City, Miami, and Los Angeles. NewDevRev will keep you up to date on any more Lightstone developments coming to the city in the coming years, so be sure to check back to learn more.
